Google has officially commenced the rollout of Android 16 following months of beta testing and industry speculation. Pixel phone users receive the update ahead of all others while other Android users will get the new version in the upcoming weeks or months.

Pixel devices will today receive their OTA update. Google provides system images and update files through its developer site for users who want immediate access. Android 16 initially presents users with a limited selection of new features upon its launch.

What’s New in Android 16?

▶ Cleaner Notification Management

Android 16 refines the notification experience. Android introduced bundled notifications starting with Android 7.0 Nougat but this version requires mandatory bundling. The notification system now combines multiple alerts from the same app into one expandable item which reduces clutter while improving clarity.

▶ Live Update Notifications

The update also introduces live update notifications. The initial real-time update feature was deployed in rideshare and delivery apps to display status updates within the status bar. When you tap on these notifications you open a pop-up which shows a live progress bar. Google developed partnerships with Samsung and OnePlus to apply these features to their Now Bar and Live Alerts systems.

▶ Expanded Security with Advanced Protection

Advanced Protection which used to be limited to account-level features now covers all Android 16 devices. When activated, this security feature prevents devices from connecting to 2G networks and disables both access to unsecured websites and USB connections to system data which boosts device protection.

▶ Fun with Emojis

The Pixel Studio app now lets users generate custom emojis because of Emoji Kitchen’s new generative AI feature.

▶ Developer-Focused Enhancements

Android 16 (API level 36) delivers under-the-hood enhancements that benefit application developers. The Android 16 version automatically adjusts apps to suit bigger displays which benefits users of tablets and foldable devices. The update unlocks new advanced camera capabilities including motion photos and hybrid auto-exposure along with night mode detection and HDR screenshot functionality.

The latest restrictions Google has imposed on background app processes aim to improve system efficiency but might negatively affect some applications.

Pixel Drop: New Features for Pixel Users

Google is introducing a new Pixel Drop together with the Android 16 update. This update doesn’t offer many new features but contains several significant improvements.

Pixel VIPs: A revamped “favorite contacts” feature. Users can display their VIP contacts on a specialized home screen widget which shows recent messages from Messages and WhatsApp along with birthdays and shared locations and additional information. These features have the ability to override Do Not Disturb mode.

Accessibility Improvements: The magnifier app now provides enhanced live search functionality along with improved compatibility for hearing aids.

Expanded Availability: Expressive Captions functionality is now available in the UK along with Canada and Australia.

Android 16 running on Pixel devices will exclusively access these features.

Big Features Coming Later This Year

Google has never been more deliberate about spreading out Android feature releases. Pixel devices will not receive Material 3 Expressive—the colorful design update—at this software release. Pixel devices will have the new feature later this year and developers should begin preparing their apps now.

Another anticipated addition is the desktop mode. This feature developed jointly with Samsung enables tablets to operate floating windows much like a desktop operating system. The desktop mode functionality for phones and foldables will activate only with an external display connection. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold does not support the feature of on-device windowing. Google phones will function completely while other Android 16 devices might only allow basic screen mirroring depending on the manufacturer.

New Update Schedule for Android

A quiet shift: Google has altered its Android release timeline. The introduction of Android 16 establishes a spring release schedule and includes plans for a smaller feature update later in the year instead of traditional fall hardware launches.

Android 16 represents incremental improvements today but sets the foundation for significant advancements in 2025. Google is phasing out its approach of launching all innovations at once and users can anticipate receiving updates in stages that enhance the Android experience over time.
