Jurassic World Rebirth Introduces a New Generation of Heroes

Universal Pictures has unveiled the final trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth ahead of its July release. It’s another look at the upcoming reboot from Jurassic World directors Colin Trevorrow and Chris Bird. Rebirth will premiere on July 2, 2025, a brand-new start for the dinosaur franchise, which also sees its characters returning to the original Jurassic Park research island. The star-studded cast is led by Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, with a focus on genetics and both modern and prehistoric survival.

Jurassic World Rebirth is the fourth Jurassic World entry in the Jurassic Park media franchise and the seventh film in the saga since the 1993 Steven Spielberg classic. Gareth Edwards, who previously directed 2014’s Godzilla, is at the helm for the reboot, with David Koepp returning to the franchise to pen the screenplay after he wrote the original Jurassic Park and its sequel The Lost World (1997).

The official synopsis for the film picks up five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, with the planet now becoming an inhospitable environment for dinosaurs. The last surviving dinosaurs have been confined to small equatorial pockets of the world where they can thrive in their prehistoric environment. Hidden in these biospheres are the three largest animals on land, sea, and air, each containing a genetic key which could be used to make a miracle drug.

Scarlett Johansson’s character Zora Bennett is a leader of elite covert operatives who is sent to undertake a top-secret mission to recover this code. Their operation is thwarted, however, when they intersect with a family out on a boating holiday, which is turned into a nightmare by a sudden dinosaur attack at sea. The survivors are forced to flee to a long-deserted island with a dark secret of its own, where once was a secret Jurassic Park research facility. A prehistoric dinosaur extinction event, we are told in the trailer, was engineered on the island. We might soon learn if that’s the worst the dinosaurs have to offer.

Featured Actors

Jurassic World Rebirth has an all-star cast led by Johansson and Ali, with Rupert Friend as Martin Krebs, a pharmaceutical company representative with a hidden agenda. Jonathan Bailey plays paleontologist Henry Loomis, while Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays Reuben Delgado, the father of a family shipwrecked by a sea attack. Reuben’s children are played by Luna Blaise, David Iacano, and Audrina Miranda, while Bechir Sylvain is one of the covert operatives on the mission. Ed Skrein and Philippine Velge are also on the cast list, though their roles are still unknown.

Film trailers often re-use footage from their earlier trailers, and Jurassic World Rebirth is no exception. The vast majority of footage from February’s first trailer is recycled in the final trailer. However, it is deployed well here to emphasize key points and some of the more expansive visual elements. It opens with an intense scene in a laboratory where a lab worker in a hazmat suit gets locked in with a large T Rex. We see his bones crushed, blood spilled, and his mouth begins to open. He screams for help, but it is already too late. The trailer conveys a sense of it: high-speed, nerve-jangling thrills and teeth-chewing dinosaur menace.

In terms of the more reptilian special effects, the film gives a special focus on the raptors and introduces an aquatic dinosaur into the mix called the mosasaur. Viewers also get to see one of the film’s key set pieces with the attempted heist of a large flying dinosaur egg. One character says, “It’s a ptero….hell, no. It’s a flying carnivore the size of an F-16.” We already know that the dinosaurs on the island include superlatives on land, in the sea, and in the air. We are introduced to the mosasaur with a character warning: “This island was created to contain the worst of the worst.”

Jurassic World Rebirth is not entirely a new beginning for the franchise. The return to the research island at the heart of the original Jurassic Park should give longtime fans the nostalgia, while the new characters and threats promise new and surprising developments for dinosaur fans everywhere. Time will tell if Rebirth does enough to restart the franchise, but there are all the familiar elements in place: a crack team with a big mission, morally grey boundaries, high-stakes genetics science, and of course, lots of dinosaurs.

The trailer is full of action, with several thrilling set pieces including multiple scenes of characters running for their lives. The first involves jungle scrambling, with some frantic running, hide and seek, and a bit of improvised practical effects by Johansson using nothing more than slabs of meat. There’s also some action underwater and in some submerged wreckage as the team makes their escape. Johansson, in particular, seems like she is going to bring a different energy to the action, less of the purely dino-napped-and-running variety, and more gritty.

Jurassic World Rebirth opens in theaters across the U.S. on July 2, 2025, just in time for the blockbuster-centric Fourth of July weekend.
