Strange New Worlds Season 3 Brings Back Dr. Roger Korby
Paramount+ has released the official trailer for season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The teaser trailer was released back in April, and while the full trailer was highly anticipated, it took a while for Paramount+ to release it. Season 3 will begin its debut on Thursday, July 17, 2025, with new episodes released weekly until September 11, 2025.
In the season finale, the U.S.S. Enterprise came under attack from the Gorn while assisting a Federation colony world with the Gorn’s invasion. Some crew members and other survivors were taken hostage during the battle, and Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) was left to make a Starfleet-determined critical decision. Pike must either retreat and obey Starfleet’s orders or go against their wishes and try to save his men. As expected from Pike, he, of course, chooses the more heroic option and tries to do what he can. The season finale ended on a cliffhanger, but the official trailer has confirmed that season 3 will indeed pick up where the last one left off.
Paramount+ first teased a small look at the beginning of season 3 at New York City Comic-Con back in October. It wasn’t much, but it was still exciting to see that it would indeed continue from where season 2 left off. The trailer confirmed that a sequence that will open the new season would be the series’s signature action-packed space battle in which the Enterprise would try to battle off the fierce and relentless Gorn.
Although the Enterprise’s crew will still be captained by Pike, the official trailer confirmed that their problems will not be over anytime soon. The Gorn storyline will eventually conclude, but it will also feature a new antagonist that will push the characters to their absolute limits. This will put their loyalty to the test and provide moments that will push their courage and will. The third season will also branch out and focus on “core Star Trek episodes and elements of faith, philosophy, ethics, and the good of the many” as well as unique episodes that will also tackle love, romance, comedy, fun, action, and mystery. The official trailer also showed the diversity of episodes that will be featured in this season, some action and dangerous, while others are more light-hearted and show the fun side of the crew. Paramount+ added that season 3 will also feature tonal shifts different from what was seen in past Star Trek installments.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ main and recurring cast will be returning to reprise their roles for season 3. But among its notable cast members is Cillian O’Sullivan, who will be playing the part of Dr. Roger Korby. The character is a legacy role from Star Trek: The Original Series and was played by Michael Strong. In the ST: SNW timeline, Korby is a “renowned archaeologist and medical archaeologist” as well as the long-missing fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). Korby’s sudden return to the timeline will most likely cause some interesting dynamics, especially since Chapel had seemingly moved on with her relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck).
Season 3 will also feature two new comedic guest stars: Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt. Rhys is well known for his work on The Fast Show and Flight of the Conchords, while Oswalt is known for The King of Queens and Rumble in the Bronx. The April teaser trailer already teased the different episode variations that season 3 will include. They are not only going to focus on their action-packed missions but also show more side episodes that will provide fun and comedic adventure stories. The official trailer gave more insight into the different episodes that will be on the lineup for season 3. The trailer showed some of the rare fun moments between the crew, with others highlighting some of the tender moments between some of the characters’ romantic storylines. A science experiment also went south on the bridge, which the official trailer also showed as part of this season’s many different missions.
The trailer also teased a scene featuring James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) as he sat in the captain’s chair for a short period. He did not serve as captain for the entirety of the mission, but the official trailer showed that his time as captain was cut short for the season. But it was also clear that his time spent as captain, however small it was, would be a transformative experience for Kirk. In that same scene, Pike also told Kirk about what it truly means to be the captain of a Starfleet vessel: “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
The official trailer concluded with a rare moment for Spock when he had an interaction with Oswalt’s Vulcan character. Oswalt’s Vulcan and Spock were trying to have a “high five” moment, with Spock first teaching the Vulcan how to do a “high five.” It worked and worked as expected, and when Oswalt’s Vulcan asked Spock to go “down low,” Spock pulled the “too slow” move. The perplexed Vulcan asked why he would do that, and Spock simply replied, “Because you are too slow.” It was a simple scene, but still one of the cutest and rare moments for Spock, especially when he was making a Vulcan character feel inadequate.
