Stranger Things Season 5: The End Begins This November
Netflix has released the official and lengthy teaser for the upcoming fifth and final season of Stranger Things. As expected from the sneak peek, this season is gearing up for a massive showdown between Hawkins’ heroes and the demons of the Upside Down.
After the jump cut, the teaser wastes no time. The creep factor comes from the close-up shots of the Upside Down, leaking further into Hawkins. Demo-dogs on the prowl, scorched floors, and a lot of action, including the use of flamethrowers, round out the nightmarish footage. One of the major reveals is the introduction of Linda Hamilton, who, according to the Stranger Things showrunner, will “arrive armed and battle-ready, joining the Hawkins crew.”
Season 4 ended with the shocking event of Vecna, the “big bad,” pulling Vecna’s monster face off and opening a large gate that leaked the Upside Down into Hawkins. In the teaser, we learn that Season 5 will start in the fall of 1987 and be in line with the third anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance, the Stranger Things main protagonist who was the first incident in Season 1.
The Stranger Things Season 5 teaser confirms that the final season will have eight episodes. But they are all feature-length installments. In essence, we get eight Stranger Things movies.
In the official synopsis of Stranger Things Season 5, we get an idea of the coming episodes and what to expect from the final battle. Hawkins is altered forever after the Rift’s opening. The remaining heroes, including the old and new cast, have one goal, which is to find and kill Vecna. Nobody knows his whereabouts, what he plans to do next, or how long he’s been around. The U.S. government has quarantined Hawkins with the military and increased efforts in hunting down Eleven and capturing her. The young psychic is forced into hiding yet again.
As the event that saw Will Byers go missing for a while approaches, the town is enveloped by a deeper sense of fear. As a result, the teaser affirms that Hawkins is up for its showdown, with a much darker and deadlier monster than before. The only chance is the full party. Every member needs to come back for the last fight.
Main cast members return for the final season, including several main and recurring characters from Stranger Things Season 4. Amybeth McNulty is back to play Vicki. Gabriella Pizzolo, Dustin’s girlfriend, is also on the return list. Jamie Campbell Bower will reprise the character of Vecna, the classic spook from Season 4. New faces, for the first time in Stranger Things, include Linda Hamilton playing the role of Dr. Kay. The Game of Thrones actress has stated that she will bring her” signature tough ass bitchy attitude.” Other newbies on the line-up include Nell Fisher, who is Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, and Alex Breaux playing Lt. Akers.
The Stranger Things Season 5 teaser has moments to raise the excitement levels and bring about nostalgia. For example, in one of the scenes, Lucas is seen in the company of people who are covered in dust at the corners of their mouths. Lucas and his friends seem to be in hiding mode, so they are hunkered down low. Their hiding location gives off the vibes of a kitchen, and with the dust and the situation (running from demo-dogs), a lot of people have associated it with the first Jurassic Park velociraptor kitchen scene.
One of the cooler moments from the teaser that is targeted to bring a few shivers to the nerves is hearing Vecna’s breathy, low-toned “found you.”
Fans, however, will feel a punch in the heart from the teaser. In the segment showing the cemetery, we see Eddie Munson’s gravestone covered in dirt and defaced with “Burn in hell” graffiti on it. It is a painful reminder of Eddie’s heroic death in the Season 4 finale as the Upside Down monster that Vecna created hung on to him and ripped his heart out, and to the residents of Hawkins, he is still a monster. Eddie’s death is possibly the most heartrending loss in Stranger Things since the death of Bob Newby in Season 2. In both instances, beloved characters were brought back into the story, only to be killed off in ways that will haunt fans for a long time. Eddie, for his part, needs a lot of healing, and the town’s misconception that he is a mass murderer is way off-base. However, when the lies are corrected and revealed, and the truth about Eddie finally comes out, the pain of injustice will still linger.
Fans will be divided over the season’s distribution and release strategy. Instead of putting the entire eight episodes together, Netflix will divide them into three parts. Although this will be a major inconvenience for those who want to binge-watch the final season all at once, Netflix will take advantage of the holiday season.
Volume 1, containing three episodes, will be released on November 26, 2025. On Christmas Day, December 25, 2025, Volume 2, also with three episodes, will drop. And in a move that speaks to Stranger Things 5‘s timing, the Season 5 finale will premiere on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025.
The effect of releasing the episodes in three tranches will mean that the final few months before the last stand in Hawkins will be extended over the holiday seasons, with all eight episodes guaranteeing to keep Stranger Things on the tongues of fans, the media, and entertainment conversations in general for weeks.
